Taming your tiger within – how to make your resolutions work
At the beginning of this new year I am being asked for ‘tips’ for making resolutions stick, how to get organised and improve life through to time management techniques and decluttering.
One of the frailties of the human condition is that we are constantly trying to improve, get something else, live a different life. Most lives are lived through the happenings of yesterday or what could happen tomorrow, good and bad, I like it and don’t like it, I’ll have it won’t have it, mine and yours.
Only when you have trained your mind can you see other dimensions, everything we experience is mind made. When you have calmed your mind, you will find it easier to listen to yourself and to others, with your heart.
Your mind, your thoughts are your master and the body is the servant. The best servant, with a weak, unfocussed master with no direction, will not work to its best performance. The master has to direct so that even when the servant isn’t strong or needs rest and recuperation the master governs the action and the house stays in order. If your mind and thoughts are all over the place, you will not be able to carry out focussed action to produce the results you want.
This comes with practice.
If you want to know more about concentration, the five hindrances, four kinds of happiness and ten virtues, a good place to start is to read the book Being Nobody Going Nowhere, by Ayya Khema ISBN 0-86171-052-5, her writings are the basis for this blog.
So, the first thing we need to do in this new year is to start a mind clean up or purification process. If you think the same old thoughts then your life will pretty much remain as it is in response to your thinking. No matter where we go, which room we are in or which country we move to, we always take ourselves and our thoughts with us.So you can see that no matter what resolutions you make, if your thoughts are still untethered, you will not keep your new behaviours in place.
The psychological accumulation of obstructions and blockages has been deposited by our emotional responses. Our mind put them there so, mind can remove them. Insight will mean that you are no longer reactive but have started on the road the rode to proactive choice and responsibility, you can then help others to do the same. You can start the process by reading, taking, life coaching, learning through meditation or personal development, all of which can help to increase the depth and dimension of the life you live and give you more tools and building blocks to make the changes you need in your life and bring you calm in a frenetic, competitive, world.
This year will be the Chinese Year of the Tiger, so its a good time to start taming your tiger within.
