Happy New year one and all, blogs will commence next week but I thought I would remind you about the hidden job market.

Remember it’s a bit like an iceberg, 80% of new opportunities are hidden below the surface.

So the beginning of January is a good time to do some research. Have a think about the kinds of companies you would like to work for, pick three  and start researching them thoroughly .

Have a look at their website, company publications and any PR to see whether they are exapanding, developing new products, opening new markets and if you have experience or skills to help them.

You can then send a direct letter to the appropriate person and ask if you could come along and meet them or spend a day in the department in which you would like to work .

They may have temporary positions, which whilst not your perfect solution, could be a chance to get in and network.

This is the time for lateral thinking and also showing you have energy, creativity and determination.

Employers who want people who can produce, not those who just say they can.
