See the wood for the trees, the value of research

A  few weeks back I mentioned that the summer was a good time to do your research. In this research you will also be able to demonstrate that your are intelligent and creative, able to put ideas into action and can get to grips with how a company operates and match their needs to yours accordingly.

Good research can help you to tap in to the hidden job market and gain an advantage. It will keep you ahead of the game and you will be able to see the wood for the trees.

In the Job Search Packages, we help you to become focussed through using self reflection questionnaires, looking at your skills and achievements  andidentifying your values. We will also help you start to look at the kind of companies or organisations you would like to work for and get you started on your research.

So,start buying or lending the magazines pertinent to your industry or use the internet. If they are a large organisation, take a look at their P.R. and Corporate Comms. Tshutterstock_36299845hese areas are a mine of information.

Are they investing in any particular sector, is someone going to be moving on and creating a vacancy, are they looking to relocate etc etc.

You can then start to prepare a targetted C.V. and cover letter outlining your skills and achievements which relate to the changes or situation you discover in your research.

You will also want to make sure that your C.V. and letter is sent to the rightperson.

It can be useful to send it to the M.D. or C.E.O. with the focus on their need and how your experience/skillset could help them fill their requirements.

Remember at the moment, more than ever you must concentrate on what you can do for them, not what they can do for you.

This is really good customer service and the company is your customer. You want them to buy you and pay you for your service(employment).

So when applying to a company directly, always make sure that you highlight your skills in the cover letter, plus demonstrate your business understanding by using words relating to cost effectiveness and profit.

People currently need people who actually can prove they can do and not just have, the can do, attitude.
